When I was learning English, I was immersing myself by reading English magazines and books. However, most often than not, I would have great difficulties to fully understand what was being said. Yes, I could understand words and even sentences but to have a full concept of the message was another story.
If you’re frustrated at your speed of learning, you’re not alone. To become really fluent in a language may take years. Usually, you can manage with a few words to ask your way around and purchase some vital necessities without too many problems, but to express your thoughts, your feelings and understand those of a foreign language takes a little bit of time.
Of course, you can move to the land, this is the best. But what if you cannot do that? Since I’ve been teaching French, I’ve looked at various ways I could help my students acquire vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Besides listening to the radio or watching a film, which is not a walk in the park, I discovered that having the English at your fingertip helps tremendously.
What about, when you read a line and cannot understand a word, you have the possibility to have a peek right there as to what this might be? Wouldn’t this help? What about, if you understand every single word in the sentence but for some reasons it does not make sense, but you can look at the English translation right there under your nose? Would this be a relief?
You don’t need to look for the words in a dictionary, which can be exasperating. This alone can take any pleasure away. And soon, you give up.
